Description

Description

The subject of the present study is the presentation of Seljuk Art and architecture in the Anatolian region from the 12th to the early 14th century. The period from the 11th to the 14th century in Asia Minor was particularly significant in many respects. The Turkish populations that settled in the west of Iran and the Turkmen nomads faced the Byzantine world. Henceforth, Anatolia exhibited characteristics of the steppe, which was the cradle of these peoples, and Byzantium called upon their strong forces against the western forces of the Crusaders that threatened it. The first incursions of the Seljuk Turks into Byzantine territory date back to around 1030 and increased significantly thereafter. After the defeat of the Byzantine army by the Seljuk Turks at Manzikert in Armenia in 1071, the way was opened wide for the invasions of the Seljuks and their Turkmen allies into the Anatolian region, where they established the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum. The first centuries of Seljuk presence in Asia Minor marked changes at all levels of political, social, and religious life. The dominant Greek Christian populations were enslaved by the new non-Christian ruler. The old Byzantine cities changed rapidly and transformed into Seljuk and Islamic ones simultaneously. In the new urban centers, new buildings were constructed to serve the needs of the conqueror. In the former Greek territories, a new civilization, the Seljuk one, flourished.

The literature on Seljuk art and architecture in the Anatolian region is exceptionally rich.
