Description & Specifications

The nightmare is the Mare of the Night, with its huge nostrils and hooves. It resides in our consciousness, which is vulnerable when we are in a state of sleep, lurking in the melancholic darkness of instincts, in the passions and temptations that blind us; it is the echo of sorrow and nostalgia for time, which, while we prefer it to remain still, is running, passing by, and leaving.

The nightmare is the horse; the disappearance of elements prevails in this novel with Amazons and breeders of thoroughbred horses, unfolding in stables, horse training facilities, racetracks, illegal horse races, and races organized for charitable purposes.

The story revolves around the stolen carcass of a racehorse and a body tossed in the sun and to the dogs, found half-naked with a bullet lodged in its back. Two stories intertwine within each other. The tracks become entangled and confused. What initially seems clear later reveals itself to be dark and convoluted.

Montalbano is mounted on a double nightmare. First, he 'rides' the 'mare-woman'. Then he awkwardly rides a bronze horse, a strange thing, which pitched him 'and he found himself sitting backward with his face turned towards the animal's tail' leading him to sandy tracks where footprints disappear and fade away.

Montalbano is a dazed augur, his memory has begun to betray him, and the 'nightmares' of the aging that is approaching him increasingly weigh on his mind. He could use a pair of 'glasses'. He feels the horse beneath him. But perhaps he himself is a 'horse' driven by the events he does not know how to decode.
