The "Greek Journey" by German Byzantinologist Karl Krumbacher (1856-1909), professor of medieval and modern Greek philology at the University of Munich, is an important historical source for the Greek countries during the second half of the 19th century. Between October 1884 and May 1885, Krumbacher, an excellent connoisseur of the vernacular language, traveled and described in an understandable way the history, antiquities, and social, economic, and anthropological characteristics of the following regions: Corfu, Athens, Syros, Chios, Mytilene, Samos, Rhodes and the Dodecanese, Smyrna, Aydin, Ephesus, Magnesia, Sardis, and Constantinople. He also visited Patmos and studied the manuscripts of the monastery library. As a true philhellene, Krumbacher loved not only ancient but also modern Greece. He emphasized the natural intelligence and higher educational level of the Greeks compared to neighboring peoples (Serbs, Bulgarians, Albanians), and praised their achievements in trade, transportation in the Mediterranean, and their accomplishments in sciences, arts, and parliamentary democracy. Krumbacher formulates here his famous theory of the "re-Hellenization" (Ruckhellenisierung) of Asia Minor, that is, the densification of the Greek-speaking populations of Ionia by newcomers from the Aegean islands during the 19th century. Greece is presented in his work as the model kingdom of the East, mature to fulfill the Great Idea. The book, dedicated to the "great philhellene" Ludwig I, King of Bavaria (d. 1866), contains an index of names and places.
