Description

This work is a distilled, almost experiential, summary of my long teaching experience at the Sorbonne. It is aimed at those among the Modern Greeks who grapple with the issue of Greek historical continuity and at foreigners (mainly Western Europeans and their American offspring) who are satisfied with a selective knowledge of their past.

My goal, therefore, is to place Byzantium in the position that its achievements dictate, as much as possible, even indirectly and almost stealthily: to succinctly express what highlights it as the first European empire and explains not only its cultural greatness (which is still insufficiently known) but also its unusual longevity for a global power (as Byzantium once was).

With this perspective as a priority, the selection of themes I have developed and analyzed here (besides the historical context that I propose as a canvas, I would say, for the embroidery) is mainly related to long-term phenomena that can somewhat elucidate the individual or collective reactions of the Byzantines to the challenges of their time and perhaps even explain the "Why" of Byzantine political reach.

  • Type: Historical Essay
  • Atmosphere: An exciting and clear answer to the questions surrounding the thousand-year-old empire, with a style that combines knowledge with directness.

In the book you will encounter:

  • The reasons why Byzantium remains misunderstood but also relevant.

  • The analysis of Byzantine identity and its relationship with Europe and Hellenism.

  • The strength of Byzantine civilization that endured over time and influenced world history.

Why We Loved It:

  • Because Arveler dispels centuries-old myths and prejudices with irrefutable arguments.

  • For the way it makes us feel proud of a heritage we often overlook.

  • Because it is the ideal book for anyone to begin their acquaintance with the world of Byzantium.

This book is for you if...

Have you ever wondered what exactly Byzantium left behind or if you want to understand why this "unknown" empire forms the foundation of modern Western civilization.

Read an excerpt:

“Why Byzantium? Because it is the only empire that lasted eleven centuries, transforming Christianity into a universal phenomenon and Greek education into a global heritage. Byzantium was not a dark Middle Ages, but a world full of light, art, and political wisdom that knew how to survive among enemies and challenges.”

“We cannot understand Europe if we do not understand Byzantium. There, the ancient codes were preserved, law was developed, and the idea of Romanity was forged, which accompanies us to this day. It is the link that connects antiquity with modern Hellenism and the bridge that united East and West.”

“That’s all from me, then: an attempt to see Byzantium without the blinkers of the past. Not as an empire that fell, but as a civilization that continues to live within our language, our religion, and our very identity. Because Byzantium is, ultimately, our own history.”

A few words about the author:

She was the first female president of the Department of History at the University of Sorbonne and the first female Rector in the 700-year history of this university. With a vast body of work in Byzantine studies, she has been honored with top international distinctions, while remaining an active voice in literature and the arts, upholding the values of humanism and Greek education.
