All summer long, work on the farm went like clockwork. The animals were happier than they could have ever imagined. Every morsel of food was a vibrant, undeniable joy, now that the food was truly theirs, produced by them for them, not rationed out by a grumpy boss. Now that the useless, parasitic human creatures were gone, there was more food for everyone.
The moral strength of Orwell lies not only in his political independence, in that he condemned both capitalism and the inherent totalitarianism present in every political system with the same vigor and clarity, but also in his peculiar innocence, in that almost childlike perspective toward the world, which made him view the animals and the English countryside with such tenderness and write with such simplicity, a perspective that transcended his pessimism and led him to believe "that it is not inevitable for the world to be as it is," as Christopher Hitchens beautifully writes.
Reading him, we see an irresistible face emerging from his pages.
