Description

Description

Landaue's monograph "The Revolution" was published in 1907. It contains a historical-philosophical examination of the significance of modern revolutions. In this way, we have a text that can be considered a fundamental anarchist philosophy of history, which is necessary for the comprehensive understanding of Landaue's communal anarchism. It also perhaps represents the only philosophy of history from a libertarian perspective.
His revolutionary theory encompasses, on the one hand, an anti-authoritarian, anti-parliamentary, and anti-militaristic position, and on the other hand, the idea of social reorganization towards a libertarian socialist culture. For Landaue, the concept of revolution includes both the discovery and development of existing resistances in history, as well as a radical renewal of all human relationships and social structures.

"The Revolution" is a beautiful book of philosophy and history that is in no way addressed only to anarchists.

As expected, Landauer cannot avoid some Western European stereotypes of his time and a Western-European-centrism. Some of his views will surprise both anarchists and non-anarchists (e.g., his approach to medieval society or to "spirit"/Geist, etc.). Martin Luther does not escape his arrows, which is not surprising, since Protestantism provided the capitalist state with the philosophical, ideological, and theological basis it needed. Landauer places particular emphasis on the monumental text "Discourse on Voluntary Servitude" (1577) by Étienne de La Boétie (which is also available in Greek from Panoptikon editions), which he uses as one of the main axes of his thought.
