In recent decades, the increasing interest in religion as a social phenomenon, shaped by the dramatic developments at the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century, such as the radicalization of Islamic movements, as well as many other movements with a religious aspect, has become a subject of particular scientific investigation.
This brings the discussion back to the role and significance of the religious factor in the modern world and leads to the necessary legal arrangement of any conflicts.
This multifaceted social phenomenon has been the subject of interdisciplinary teaching in the interdepartmental undergraduate course Society, Religion & Law for several years, in which the authors of this volume harmoniously collaborate, after the unanimous approval of their respective Schools of Theology and Law at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
It is hoped that this manual will assist the students of the interdepartmental course as well as inform those interested in the various –especially social and legal– dimensions of the religious phenomenon.
