A FEW WORDS ABOUT AUSTRIAN LITERATURE

The country of slender, deeply shadowed mountains and blue rivers, home to many of Central Europe's greatest composers, could not lag behind in literature as well. It is known that the first examples of literature in this beautiful country date back to the early 11th century in the mountainous regions of the Alps, which mainly consist of ecclesiastical texts that appear to be exemplary adaptations of Old Testament scriptures, selected and recorded by some monks in the region of Carinthia around the end of the eleventh century.

About a century later, the first elements of a popular poetry that celebrates the heroic deeds of knights and nobles in general appear, reflecting a shift in the manner and style of writing, turning towards human emotions and their sensibilities. This phenomenon takes place around the world of nobles, mainly in the imperial courts and particularly in those of Vienna.

Here, a significant role is played by the knight Der von Kürenberg (1160?) with his many folk songs, especially for female voices - under this name, more individuals are presented in German-speaking areas - while at the same time another figure, Dietmar von Eist (1145-1170) from Upper Austria emerges as a leading representative of the Minnesänger (love songwriters).

At the same time, Reiner von Zweiter (1200-1252) from Upper Rhine encounters the Tyrolean Walther von der Vogelweide (1230?) and they embark on long travels in German-speaking areas presenting their songs. They are the ones who paved the way, and for over a century, the metrical popular (narrative) poetry dominated, cultivated by minor poets, resulting in a substantial number of epic and love songs being recorded.

The amorous passions of wandering knights and the adventures of folk heroes permeate the popular muse, creating paradoxically an era of blissful coexistence between the noble and common classes. A dramatic change is observed in the mid-14th century, with the emergence of Humanism at the court of Frederick V. There we meet the young poet Enea Silvio de Piccolimini (1405-1464) from Corsignia in Siena, later Pope Pius II with his famous work: Historia rerum ubique gestarum.

Thus, the emperor's court becomes a focal point of Humanism. Shortly thereafter, several Austrian poets will emerge, including Oswald Volkenstein (1377-1445), Heinrich der Teichner (1330-1369), and Konrad Zeltis (1459-1508), among others.

The following century in areas of the Alps, specifically in monasteries of St. Gallen, female monasticism finds an outlet in theological and poetic narratives. These include the nuns of (Die Schwestern von St. Katharina), especially: Anna Bruhi, Elsbeth, Strierli, Anna Humbist, Anna Falk, and Agnes Bützli. However, a significant voice of female presence in 17th-century Austrian literature is undoubtedly represented by Katharina Regina von Greifenberg (7.9.1633-10.4.1694) from Seyssenegg Amstetten in Lower Austria.

Indeed, the poems from her collection, Geistliche Gedichte, convey a different atmosphere in the poetry of her time. Although deeply influenced by the premature death of her younger sister, the sentimental modernity of her poems lends comfortable lyrical tones and is considered one of the most representative voices of Baroque poetry. Her poems become songs that undoubtedly inspire and soothe.

“...Colorful stars of the celestial dome and you moon of the nights, you illuminate the crown, for the sunbeam takes back from the earth our sphere...” but also: “The grave is the peace of my thoughts; leave the worries and complaints to calm down, settle deep within me all the cravings of my heart...”
