The Cretan dialect is one of the most important Modern Greek dialects. It has a very rich vocabulary, expressive completeness, and a long literary tradition.
When Crete was under Venetian rule, its dialect was elevated to a written form of Modern Greek. During this time, mainly from the 16th century until 1669, texts of national significance were written in the Cretan dialect, which greatly contributed to enriching modern Greek.
Nicolaos Kontosopoulos, former director of the "Center for the Compilation of the Historical Dictionary of the Modern Greek Language at the Academy of Athens," writes: "Some linguists and literary historians believe that if the Cretan literary production had not stopped with the island's occupation by the Turks in 1669, the problem of Modern Greek diglossia (Katharevousa-Demotic) would not exist, as the spoken language would have prevailed in our written expression based on the Cretan dialect, that is, in Cretan."
