BERLIN 1929
In Berlin’s police slang, “wet fish” means “unsolved case.” Ambitious detective Gereon Rath has just arrived in Berlin and is faced with a metropolis in ecstasy, filled with political and social upheavals.
A dead man who cannot be identified and bears traces of inhumane torture remains a mystery for the Police’s Criminal Investigation Department. The wet fish is thrown at Rath, and soon his investigation leads him to a group of exiled Soviet dissidents who possess a lot of gold in order to buy many weapons.
Rath, dizzy from the pace of the case, enters circles of paramilitaries and is swept into the maelstrom of Machiavellian plots of the interwar period. Communist mobilizations clash with the rapidly rising Nazism, and together they compose a Berlin delusional pantheon of characters who will witness the beginning of the end of the Weimar Republic.
This is the first book featuring detective Gereon Rath, on which the popular television series Babylon Berlin is based. Kutscher not only creates exquisite crime literature but also skillfully captures life in Berlin just before cataclysmic events change the world.
