Description

On a farm, the animals revolt and overthrow the oppressive rule of man. The pigs take charge, appearing more capable than the other animals. However, the new regime quickly proves to be just as bad, or even worse, than the previous one. Mainly because it eliminates the possibilities for resistance...

George Orwell's allegory features animals as its protagonists, similar to those in Aesop's fables. 'Animal Farm', which made the author globally known, is a satire of totalitarian regimes and particularly a critique of the Stalinist phenomenon. It is a scathing portrayal of a new and hopeful leadership that, as soon as it comes to power, becomes just like all the previous ones.

[Excerpt from the text on the back cover of the edition]

The Content at a Glance

The book tells the story of a group of animals on a farm who, tired of the oppression of their human owner, revolt and take control. At first, life on the farm seems ideal, based on the principles of Animalism, a system of thought founded on the equality and freedom of all animals. Soon, however, things begin to change, as the pigs, who are more intelligent and organized, gradually assume leadership and start exploiting the other animals, leading to a new form of tyranny.

Allegory and Political Satire

This is the most crucial element you need to understand. "Animal Farm" is a harsh and insightful allegory about the October Revolution in Russia and the rise of Stalinism.

  • The Animals: They represent various social classes and groups of the Russian revolution.
  • Mr. Jones: The owner of the farm, symbolizes Tsar Nicholas II and the old, corrupt order.
  • The Pigs (especially Napoleon and Snowball): Napoleon represents Stalin, while Snowball represents Trotsky. The pigs as a whole symbolize the Bolsheviks and the communist leadership.
  • Boxer the Horse: A hardworking and loyal animal, symbolizes the Russian working class, who work hard but are ultimately betrayed.
  • The Dogs: They represent the secret police and the oppressive mechanisms of the regime.
Through the story of the animals, Orwell condemns authoritarian governments, propaganda, the manipulation of history, and the destruction of the original ideals of a revolution.

Why It Is Timeless

Although it was written in 1945 and refers to specific historical events, the themes addressed in "Animal Farm" remain relevant. The book serves as a warning about the dangers of unchecked power, how revolution can degenerate into tyranny, and how propaganda can influence public opinion. It is a lesson in critical thinking and the need to remain vigilant against all forms of authoritarianism.

Writing Style

Orwell uses a simple, direct, and clear writing style, which makes the book accessible to a wide audience. Despite the simplicity of the language, the message is profound and irony permeates every page.

In summary

By purchasing "Animal Farm", you are not simply acquiring a book, but a valuable tool for understanding politics, society, and human nature. It is a book that makes you think, question, and see the world around you with a more critical eye.

Wonderful book, it may be relatively small in content but it is huge in depth and meaning! This and 1984 are simply top-notch!

A truly remarkable work, deeply allegorical and vivid, which aims to highlight in a vivid yet simultaneously "humorous" way the problems of our society and the ills of authority!
The way Orwell presents his characters allows both young and old to reflect and ponder on modern political life and the way in which any authority (regardless of ideology) acts to serve personal interests!

The farm of animals depicts in a simple way the problems of totalitarian regimes that gradually trample on every right and impose their own reality. The whole process of political transformation is described, from the initial hope for new power to doubts and finally corruption and authoritarianism.

A very well-written book by Orwell, with pleasant narration that flows effortlessly and a plot that becomes more and more complex and interesting. The allegory with the farm and the animals is intriguing and the choice of animals is not random, given the characteristics attributed to them. The book resembles "1984" due to their common theme.
