Description

This book, based on a comparative study of original sources (Latin-Greek/Byzantine) and an extensive bibliography updated to the present day, examines some key aspects of early medieval French (Frankish) history, such as Gregory of Tours' "History of the Franks" along with other significant primary Western sources of the era up to the end of the 8th century AD.

Additionally, it analyzes Frankish-Byzantine relations from the early 6th century to the late 7th century, within the framework of an overview of the early centuries of the Merovingian dynasty of kings. It also examines the last critical decades of this dynasty, up to the mid-8th century, when the continuously declining Merovingians had essentially handed over the reins of power to the powerful court officials of their state ("mayors of the palace"), who distinguished themselves as military leaders.

These leaders contributed to the further unification of the Frankish populations, the promotion of missionary work among their neighboring Germanic peoples, and their role in the establishment and strengthening of the Papal State from the second half of the 8th century, preparing for the founding of the Holy Roman Empire of the Frankish Nation by Charlemagne in 800 AD.

Meanwhile, various phases of the history of the German-speaking peoples with whom the Franks came into contact either through conflict or diplomacy are examined, such as the Alemanni, the Burgundians, the Visigoths, the Ostrogoths, the Lombards, as well as the Turkic-speaking Avars.

The described events are supplemented by various details of the internal history of the early Frankish state with a detailed chronology at the end of the book and a synchronistic table of Merovingian kings, mayors of the palace, and Byzantine emperors, while the main text of the book is enriched with numerous texts from original sources as well as opinions and views from various contemporary scholars of the early European Middle Ages.
