Description

Description

The idea to compose, by conversing with Mάνος Ελευθερίου, his biographical (fictional) story came to us as beautiful ideas do. By chance, one August evening during our shared vacation in 2010. We had known him for a few years, having developed a friendly relationship. However, we had known him well long before this acquaintance, through his work, which had marked our youth.

When we revealed our intentions to him in September of that same year, he did not respond with anything clear. He only said: "I’ll be waiting for you on Sunday at 10:30." Thus, for the next three years, we met on Sunday mornings at his home in Neo Psychiko, and he, sitting in his armchair, prompted by our questions, let his memory flow effortlessly to places where his recollections and emotions took him.

I remember leaving school and going home to write the same poem a hundred times. I had discovered how to write the same thing in different ways, something that stayed with me throughout my life. The publication includes rare archival material.

My grandmother, my mother's mother, was called Evangelia Antonopoulou. My mother was Eudoxia. I still see her sometimes, she comes to me in my dreams. She was always close to her children. She used to sing, she had a good voice. Once, during the war period, a Greek-American writer, when she was young – I was two and a half years old – told her to cultivate her voice. And she wondered: "To cultivate my voice? What does 'cultivate' mean?" In her mind, cultivation was for fields. And she was right. She really did have a beautiful voice. And my grandmother had a beautiful voice too. My sister, Angeliki, in 1978, hosted a radio show and featured my grandmother singing, a seventy-eight-year-old woman. She had a contralto voice.
