In Greece during the Crisis, the most extreme positions and opinions have emerged. A toxic cloud of conspiracy theories and irrationality has settled on the social body, causing cancerous mutations. Groundless myths, simplistic stereotypes, distorted ideologies, simplistic obsessions, and monstrous ideological constructs poison public discourse and form a "common sense" that is willing to surrender to demagogues and populists who promise earthly paradises.
The problem with what has been mentioned previously is that they are not blatant lies. They contain some truths, which are mixed with dogmas and prejudices, generalizing and simplifying, leading to arbitrary conclusions. As Maria Todorova aptly observes, what should concern us about stereotypes is not their content, but their construction, their context. Unfortunately, Greek society has not been "disenchanted," as Max Weber hoped for the societies of modernity...
Petros Papasarantopoulos' book represents a calm voice, a voice of reason—if I may use the term—amidst the clamor of irrationality and emotionalism that has dominated. This is primarily its value. P. P. primarily seeks to investigate in the field of ideology—a field that he particularly cherishes, as one can ascertain by following his writing and public interventions—the causes of today's woes. Essentially, with this intervention, the author attempts to deconstruct the dominant ideology of the Post-Dictatorship era.
