The "Theory of Contemporary Music" is aimed at students of all musical instruments in modern departments and provides them with everything they need to know about contemporary music theory. The book is divided into two parts, each corresponding to an academic year of study and covers both years of modern theory studies (4 semesters), according to the program of modern music schools. The originality of this book lies in the fact that it provides students of modern departments with the necessary classical background, as well as students of classical departments with the material of contemporary theory and modern notation, which is so important for a modern musician.
In the first part, the basic concepts of music theory and notation are analyzed and the student is progressively introduced to intervals, scales, musical meters, etc. In the second part, the "modes" are presented, which have their roots in ancient Greece and are widely used in Medieval and Renaissance music, as well as (in a different way) in Jazz. Then, more advanced concepts are explained, such as voicing, chord extensions, asymmetric meters, etc. At the end of each part, there are general exercises covering the entire material, as well as annual tests.
The book is written in a concise and informative manner. Its structure in sections that coincide with the progression of the academic year makes it particularly practical and user-friendly, while the abundance of examples and well-selected exercises help the student to deeply understand the presented concepts.
