Description

This study deals with the civil conflicts among the Greeks during the Greek Revolution, which, at times, distracted from the national cause. It investigates their causes, highlights their characteristics in detail, and traces their impacts, not only during the Struggle for Independence but also throughout the two centuries of Greek independence. A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE SERIES The Greek Revolution is justifiably ranked among the great revolutions that marked the era of Modernity. The bicentennial of its outbreak has understandably heightened the interest of modern Greeks to learn about its basic characteristics. This series aims in this direction. By crafting the portraits of four of the leading figures of the Greek Revolution (Theodoros Kolokotronis, Ioannis Kapodistrias, Petrobey Mavromichalis, Bouboulina) and analyzing four of the main themes related to it (1814-1821: The preparation of a revolution, Internal strife and conflicts, From the Massacre of Chios to the Exodus of Messolonghi, The Great Powers and the Revolution), it aspires to contribute to public history and the dialogue about the character and forms of the Greek Rebirth. The volumes of the series are authored by distinguished historians and expert scientists, following the rules of scientific research.

Read an excerpt

Two centuries after the Greek Revolution, the community of our homeland's historians continue to be concerned with the causes that diverted the revolutionary momentum of the first two years, leading to the harsh civil conflicts of 1823-1825, which largely nullified the impressive military successes achieved up to that point. Everything suggests that the path toward civil war was largely unavoidable, as pre-modern forces, simmering for years, were unleashed in the furnace of the Revolution and hastily and roughly intertwined with modern elements and ideas. Differences between masters and subordinates, between traditionalists in fustanella and vests, and those who dressed more elegantly, between traditional leaders of the subjugated Nation and new contenders, between romantic revolutionaries and conscious or naive adventurers and agents of foreign powers, were unleashed like a genie from Aladdin's magic lamp, radically changing all kinds of political and social balances in the Greek Peninsula.
