Description

Laskarina Bouboulina (née Pinotsi), known to all of us as "Bouboulina," linked her name and life with the Revolution of 1821. In a purely male-dominated world, the "Great Lady of Spetses" became a source of inspiration for the revolutionary Greeks, with her determination, economic and family sacrifices. Multiple roles coexist in her persona: philanthropic, tough, faithful, giving, (un)selfish, fighter, negotiator, wife, widow, sister, mother of many children, mother of heroes, but above all, a woman, a heroine herself. The Captainess of the Greek Revolution will always be a figure of high symbolism for the Nation, Womanhood, Struggle, Freedom. A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE SERIES The Greek Revolution is justifiably ranked among the great revolutions that marked the era of Modernity. The completion of two hundred years since its outbreak has understandably heightened the interest of modern Greeks to learn about its basic characteristics. This series aims in that direction. By crafting the portraits of four of the leading figures of the Greek Revolution (Theodoros Kolokotronis, Ioannis Kapodistrias, Petrobey Mavromichalis, Bouboulina) and analyzing four of the main themes related to it (1814-1821: The preparation of a revolution, Internal strife and conflicts, From the Massacre of Chios to the Exodus of Messolonghi, The Great Powers and the Revolution), it aspires to contribute to public history and the dialogue about the character and forms of the Greek Rebirth. The volumes of the series are authored by distinguished historians and expert scientists, following the rules of scientific research.

Although the problems caused by the Turkish raids continued until the complete dominance of the Ottomans (1460), with the exception of the Venetian possessions, the mentioned Albanian population "found a hospitable land and a people of the same faith and brotherhood, with whom, living mostly in harmony, they quickly merged, blending their distinct endurance and roughness of character with the cleverness and subtlety of mind of the locals, with whom they have since shared fortunes and adventures." Three centuries later, after sufficient time had passed since their settlement (including in Spetses), the Albanian settlers, now known as Arvanites, "believers in Christ and having lived brotherly in a community of struggles and misfortunes with the locals for four centuries..." had nothing in common with the Albanians of Epirus, the Shqiptars, the Islamized Chams and Bekiaris, also known as Arnauts and Turkalbanians, whom they confronted decisively both on the mainland and at sea in the second half of the 18th century (Orlov Revolt 1770-1771) and especially during the War of Independence of 1821.
