This book does not come to confirm the return of morality to the forefront of public discourse. In fact, it constitutes an endeavor aimed at demonstrating that morality did not suddenly attract human interest. Humans sought its help not in a crisis of repentance, but for exactly the opposite: to confirm and justify a course of events that they themselves have created.

In contrast to such logic, this book attempts to critique the dominant ideology regarding morality today, choosing to discuss morality not based on 'processes' and 'conditions', but with direct reference to the human condition, which it distinguishes as a unity characterized by timeless traits.

It does this by highlighting the significance of history and narrative in shaping human lifestyles. A model of narrative in such a discussion is the life of Christ, as recounted in the story that the Divine Liturgy comprises.
