"The Pelican" is a masterpiece of technique with clear similarities to the short stories of Edgar Allan Poe, whom Strindberg studied and admired.
The harsh Mother, of Luciferian origin, the ambitious Son-in-law, and the dark, guilt-ridden yet vengeful duo of the Son and the Daughter are individuals doomed from the outset to poison each other’s lives, while the present/absent ghost of the Father (the movement of the empty armchair in the air is ingenious) adds terror to the nightmares of the living.
An unrelenting one-act play where the macabre prevails over the sensual and cynicism drowns any trace of innocence.
"The Forewarning" is a comedy, by definition a lighter work, with a similar theme.
A couple, whose relationship is tested, decides to live separately for a time; however, the hysterical landlady of the couple and her naive daughter -with clear signs of dissolute behavior- briefly invade the Lord's life.
The conclusion is familiar from other works in the global repertoire: the couple's relationship rekindles when the Lady begins to envy the Lord once again.
