The book proposes a tour of Athens and its history. Through monuments, spaces, streets, and buildings - even some that no longer exist - the atmosphere of earlier periods of the city is brought to life, primarily that of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.
"Guides" to our tour consist of excerpts from historical, literary, travel, autobiographical, and journalistic texts, which refer to buildings and their inhabitants or to snapshots that have the city's spaces as their "background."
During this parallel tour, both historical and literary, associations unfold, figures from the past fleetingly pass through the streets, squares, and cafés, historical personalities appear in their homes or public spaces, literary heroes move in their own lives, great historical events take place, and small street scenes unfold.
In this way, Athens is recreated through space, the Athens of significant historical moments, the Athens of everyday life, work, and entertainment, of the famous and the anonymous.
