The most important shield of protection against microbes is our skin. It serves as a barrier to the external environment while simultaneously helping to maintain internal body conditions. Sometimes the skin gets injured - that is, its continuity is broken - and the result is a wound. Infections occur more frequently when the skin does not heal quickly or well, because more microbes penetrate the wound. Therefore, healing a wound is the primary goal for protection against infections.

Wound healing is a complex and gradual process that begins immediately after the injury occurs. Blood gathers in the area and starts clotting, forming a bridge over which skin on one side of the wound can cross to meet the skin on the other side. Special cells start to develop and multiply to cover the area. Furthermore, the body sends special cells, phagocytes, to the injured area, whose purpose is to "fight" the microbes, so they do not grow excessively and cause various problems.

The healing process is positively or negatively influenced by various factors. Proper nutrition, warmth, hydration, and the absence of systemic diseases favor good wound healing. More than any other factor, however, healing is delayed by the presence and especially the growth of microbes.
