Synthetic absorbable surgical suture of polyglycolic acid PGA 2.0 with a length of 75mm. It is used for holding in contact and closing soft tissues, even in ophthalmic surgeries. It is not indicated for use in cardiovascular and neurological surgeries.
After the implantation of the suture, a moderate local inflammation of the tissues is observed, followed by its gradual encystment in fibrous connective tissue. This is followed by a gradual loss of the strength and mass of the suture due to its absorption with the help of the hydrolysis mechanism during which the polymer breaks down into glycolic acid which is absorbed and metabolized from body to body.
During the absorption of the PGA suture, initially, a loss of its strength is observed without a significant loss of its mass. The PGA suture retains more than 75% of the European Pharmacopoeia's requirement for residual strength at the end of the second week from its implantation and over 35% approximately at the end of the third week. The absorption of the suture is completed within a period of 50 – 90 days.
