Synthetic absorbable surgical suture made of polyglycolic acid PGA, with a length of 75mm. It is used for the approximation and closure of soft tissues, even in ophthalmic surgeries.
After implantation, a moderate local tissue inflammation is observed, followed by gradual encapsulation of the suture in fibrous connective tissue. This is followed by a gradual loss of tensile strength and mass of the suture due to its absorption through hydrolysis, during which the polymer is broken down into glycolic acid.
During the absorption of the PGA suture, an initial loss of tensile strength is observed without significant mass loss. The PGA suture retains more than 75% of the European Pharmacopoeia's required strength at the end of the second week and over 35% at the end of the third week.
The absorption of the suture is completed within 50 – 90 days.
