March 1821. Twelve-year-old Anastasios, living in Turkish-occupied Athens, meets his friend Vasilis for night fishing by a river outside the city. At one point, they hear gunshots. Terrified, they run to hide in a tree. There, they discover an injured Greek man being chased by Turks. The man gives them an incomprehensible message and then faints. The two boys decide to help him and hide him in a cave to spend the night. The next day they return, but the wounded man has mysteriously disappeared.

The two friends begin their search, trying to uncover what has happened. However, they do not know that they have gotten caught up in a dangerous adventure. They will realize this a few days later when they decode the message given to them by the strange man. It is then that they will understand that all the Turkish police are after them. Will the two friends manage to escape and protect the great secret they hold about Greece, which is ready to rise up against the Turks?
