Its use is not indicated in ophthalmic and microsurgical procedures. Implantation of the synthetic absorbable surgical suture MONOCRYL initially causes minimal localized tissue inflammation, characteristic of a foreign body response, followed by appropriate local fibrous connective tissue development.
A gradual loss of tensile strength and suture mass follows due to absorption by hydrolysis, during which the suture is metabolized into adipic acid, which is eventually fully absorbed and metabolized in the tissues.
