The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against oblivion. Milan Kundera
On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the 1821 Revolution, the official narrative seeks to resurrect stereotypes that historical research has deconstructed. The 21 stories of the book aim to contribute to this deconstruction. Guided by the words of D. Solomos, that "the nation must learn to consider as national what is true" and not whatever conveniently serves the ruling class.
In these small narratives, revolutionaries ignored by official history take the stage, such as Vladimirescu, Vasileiou, Karatzas, Oikonomou, Logothetis. Great but also controversial figures of the Struggle, such as, among others, Mavrokordatos and Karaiskakis, are presented through the actual events and their contradictions without hagiographies or demonizations.
Hidden truths of the Revolution that have been silenced or misrepresented attempt to be resurrected from oblivion and distortion. The disappearance of the Philiki Eteria, the infamous Loans, and generally the policy of the Great Powers towards the Struggle. The attitude of the prominent towards the refugees after the massacre at Psara, as well as in besieged Messolonghi, the "historical problem" known as Kapodistrias.
Stories like those of Pacifiko and Papoulakos that chronologically follow the Revolution but are intertwined with it in countless ways. 200 years later, a phantom continues to linger...
