Description & Specifications

The Lord Byron refers to the Loans of Independence in the poem Don Juan: “Every loan is not merely a speculative hit, but it establishes a nation or overturns a throne.” On the other hand, Eleftherios Venizelos emphatically emphasized: “...it would be the ultimate naïveté to believe that there can be an independent state without possessing a corresponding and well-organized military force.”

Some countries are favored by geography as they are free from interstate tensions and conflicting relationships in their geopolitical surroundings. Greece is not among them. It was and is doomed to thrive in a fluid and unstable geopolitical environment. Defense spending is the annual premium it pays to protect its national interests and sovereign rights.

The inescapable geopolitical reality does not allow it the luxury of another choice. This forced investment in its security burdens it financially and deprives it of valuable developmental assistance. However, defense spending was not the womb that gave birth to all of Greece's fiscal woes in the post-war and especially in the post-transition period.
