Description & Specifications

The present collection of photographs and drawings of Classicist Athens constitutes a work of exceptional importance in terms of scientific, visual, and artistic perspectives. It is primarily regarded as a treasure trove of documents of particular historical value, both for its time and for today's recipients.

Heinz Johannes, a collaborator of the German Archaeological Institute in Athens, with the assistance of urban planner architect Kostas Biris and the historian, as well as photographer Werner Wagner, organized the first major exhibition of "Classicist Athens" in 1938. Very few of the early editions of the work published on this occasion have survived to this day.

The content of the collection's panels showcases, through illustrations of travelers, photographs, and depictions of distinguished buildings, the historical space and design of the new city, as well as the architectural wealth that both Greek and foreign creators bequeathed to Athens during the initial period of the city's reconstruction, primarily during the reign of Otto.

The enhanced reissue of this collection, enriched with commentary, offers invaluable documentation of mostly demolished architectural landmarks of both private and public architecture of urban Athenian Classicism. Above all, it serves as a minimal "tribute" to those pioneering researchers who understood and captured the cultural magnitude and aesthetic standards of the creation that emerged in 19th-century Athens.
