Description

Compact prime lens with excellent construction.

This standard prime lens combines high image quality and beautiful background defocusing (bokeh) in a compact design with superb build quality and smart functionality. Easy to carry, it is ideal for portrait and cityscape photography.

The fast and silent precision autofocus is perfect for capturing photos and videos. The mechanical design makes the most of advanced optical elements with an efficient arrangement of three aspherical lens elements and a short back focus, creating an ultra-compact lens weighing just 173 g.

The lens is ideal for city shots or video shooting with a gimbal. The small size, which fits both full-frame and APS-C bodies, means absolute portability.

This lens also adapts well to APS-C bodies, providing a wide-angle focal length of 60 mm (equivalent to 35 mm in full-frame format), making it easier to capture various scenes, from city shots to portraits.

Incredible little lens. It transforms any body into a compact setup ideal for daily use and travel. Especially if you get it during a cashback period, it's even more worth it.

Of course, it has competition regarding its price. The Sigma 45mm f/2.8 is also a strong option with a noticeable price difference, and of course, the now well-known Chinese Viltrox 40mm f/2.5 and TTArtisan 40mm f/2.0 at ridiculously low prices compared to the Sony. There's also the Samyang 45mm f/1.8 at a good price and with a significant difference in brightness. So if budget is an issue, it's clear that any of the above lenses will do the job.

But if you decide to spend the money and given that the focal length suits you, in my humble opinion, it does not disappoint. For experimenting with 40mm to see if it suits you, obviously it's more advantageous to buy one of the aforementioned lenses.

Excellent build quality, very good handling without lacking anything despite its very small size, and optically excellent. Maybe I could say that sometimes it has somewhat more pronounced chromatic aberration, which is not a problem in JPEG files and also during RAW processing.

Below are some links with images from the lens mounted on an A7IV, for anyone who wants to see more shots due to the image limitation here.

A lens for special requirements. (40mm)

This particular series of lenses was sorely missing from Sony. Compact (almost like a pancake), incredibly light and quite fast in focusing.
It is mainly aimed at amateurs, but also hobbyists/enthusiasts.

The image quality is excellent and does not lag behind any of the other prime lenses in the G series.

With an aperture of f2.5, it is not the brightest, but now the capabilities of Sony cameras at higher ISO help you "cover" those few stops. It also has satisfactory Bokeh.

This lens is ideal for street photography due to its size. Also for everyday casual/family photography.
But I believe that even in portraits (especially if someone gets the 50mm) will be quite satisfied.
