Description

The Anglo-Greek Patakis Dictionary was created to aid in the understanding and use of modern English and American language.

This modern and fully updated dictionary contains:
- more than 50,000 English entries and examples
- more than 70,000 translations into Greek
- many idioms and phrasal verbs
- additional information on certain thematic areas (within cultural boxes)
- contemporary vocabulary for certain fields: the Internet, economy, ecology, social issues, business
- many abbreviations
- phonetic transcription for all headwords.

Striving for the highest possible accuracy, we chose to descriptively render English words for which we believed no equivalent Greek words with the same semantic load could be found.

It is a work that took six years to complete and is designed for the needs created by the use of the English language today.
A fundamental point in this dictionary is that in many cases we explained the meaning of the English word, because it is often difficult to find the absolutely precise equivalent interpretation between the two languages. This is especially true for words that are culturally or historically connected: for example, entries like dinner / supper / tea or minister / secretary of state. Such conceptual differences are adequately explained in the dictionary.
It is worth noting the modern approach to the English language achieved with this dictionary.

Because languages are dynamic, we included as many new words as possible. We present words from the fields of electronics and computers, from the field of economics, and so on.

Also included:

- Phonetics, using the International Phonetic Alphabet and presenting both British and American pronunciation. [Phonetics]
- How each word is used, depending on the style of speech (everyday speech, formal speech, slang, etc.). [Registers]
- British and American spelling and respective differences in meanings. [British and American spelling]
- Difficult grammatical forms (e.g., tenses of irregular verbs) often constitute a special entry with a reference to the main entry. [Cross-references]
- The specific conditions under which a word or phrase is exactly used. [Context of meanings]
- Phrasal verbs and idioms. [Phrasal verbs and idioms]
- Boxes providing cultural information. [Cultural information]
- Acronyms, initialisms, and abbreviations. [Acronyms and abbreviations]
- Proper names, including place names. [Proper names]
