This is the author's first book and holds a distinguished place among all his writings due to its wide circulation. It is already in its eighteenth edition - the first was published in 1978 - and has been translated into ten foreign languages so far.
The book is written in the form of a dialogue and focuses on a discussion the author had with a holy Elder and hermit one evening in the desert of Mount Athos, primarily regarding the subject of the Jesus Prayer: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me." It serves as a guide for all who wish to practice the Jesus Prayer and clarifies how essential this Prayer is in our lives.
In a systematic and simple way, it explains that before the Fall, prayer was made effortlessly, like the endless praise of angels, but after the Fall, struggles and efforts are required. Great attention and vigilance are necessary for the mind of the believer to remain focused on God.
As the hermit answers the author's questions, he explains how the mind of man enters the heart, and there prayer operates automatically. This is called mental prayer or the prayer of the heart. There is mention of the "Phases of the Jesus Prayer," that is how this sacred work of prayer develops.
Clear explanations are provided about the "Coming and Withdrawal of Grace" and the "Fruits of the Jesus Prayer," which include the unification of the whole person, divine comfort, and happiness amidst the trials of life. We are informed of the dangers and deceptions that may arise during the Jesus Prayer, referring to tears, psychological methods, and the complex warfare waged by the devil to prevent the praying individual from engaging in this work of prayer.
Emphasis is placed on the utmost importance and value of obedience to a spiritual father and guide in order to avoid deceptions. Through the study of the entire discussion, we understand what passions are and how essential it is to strive to cleanse our soul from them and gain awareness of our sinfulness.
There is nothing mechanical in the teaching of mental prayer; on the contrary, it is connected with the method by which a person is healed. As a person experiences the three phases of spiritual life, namely the cleansing of the heart, the illumination of the mind, and deification, he unites with the Triune God, for it is the cleansing from passions that will bring illumination and union with God.
The basic condition for attracting God's grace and mercy is to remember the name of God in an atmosphere of repentance and humility and to participate in the sacraments of the Church, primarily in the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. According to the Fathers, the Jesus Prayer is the greatest science and contains within it all the theology of the Orthodox Church. It is not a task solely for monks and nuns, but is necessary for the clergy and the laity living in the world.
