From the editorial: The Ethical Dimension of Cinema

We were about to forget it... Georges Sadoul spoke of it, Éric Rohmer put it into practice, and many others from a previous, theoretically outdated generation. Both seemed somewhat lost in the trivia of theory, having seemingly lost their cinematic foundations amidst frivolous constructs and online cleverness.

Fortunately, the over ninety-year-old Marco Bellocchio managed to “see the poets” and with the persistence of a teenager set out to remind us –in the most critical period of the seventh art– of the reason why a shot can encompass an entire world.

Could it be that the beloved compatriot The Traitor, who with his Godfather transformed a handful of criminals into philosophers, uttering grandiose phrases like “keep your friends close and your enemies closer” or again “I made him an offer he couldn't refuse”?

He must have held within him for years the belief that Coppola's timeless masterpiece, thanks to the chiaroscuro of lighting, brought his shots to the limits of Caravaggio and Tintoretto, yet remained on this side of their ethical dimension.

The Godfather, with its contemplative tone, became a model, inspiring a desire for imitation in every commercial adventurer, as he deceived the ruler of cheapness. We had seen it in Jarmusch's Ghost Dog, it was also outlined by Scorsese in his Goodfellas –with a touch of tenderness– but now...
