It would not have been possible for two events of such political and military significance as the French Revolution and its extension, the Napoleonic era, which undeniably changed the political and social status of Europe and the world to some extent, and left indelible marks on the spiritual identity of the peoples of almost the entire globe, to exclude the Greek world of the Diaspora as well as the enslaved Greeks of the Ottoman-occupied regions from their sphere of influence. After all, the Elder of Moria is explicitly clear on this point: “The French Revolution and Napoleon made, in my opinion, the world’s eyes open.” Subsequently, Kolokotronis adds a significant phrase, which more clearly defines his thought: “Earlier, nations were not recognized, kings were considered as gods on earth, and whatever they did, it was called well done” (on the same page). With the phrase “nations were not recognized,” Kolokotronis implies that nations as autonomous entities had no political existence, no recognition; until then, states were despotic, with few exceptions (England, USA). Even if the phrase “l’état c’est moi,” attributed to Louis XIV, was perhaps never explicitly spoken, states were ruled by kings, while nations still had a faint historical presence. Of course, this does not mean they did not exist. From the French Revolution onward, the nation became a leading element of history, at least until the late 1920s, when the old colonial system completely collapsed.
This volume is exactly what its title suggests: "Great Figures and Great Moments of '21". Not the entire struggle in its diversity and multifaceted dimension. However, the careful reader, by reading it, will approach the truth about the most important events that occurred and contributed to the establishment of the Revolution, as well as about the life and actions of its protagonists. The author presents not only the heroic events but also some dark aspects that naturally existed and unfortunately will always exist in all uprisings. Because his aim is to provide an accurate and not a "eulogistic" or "deconstructive" history.
