Description

Description

Small and versatile.

The fixed SEL35F18 lens is the ideal auxiliary lens, capable of handling various subjects, from night shots (thanks to the bright maximum aperture) to portraits with beautiful defocusing.

Compact and versatile

In combination with Sony's E-mount α cameras, APS-C E-mount lenses offer top performance.

Smooth Defocusing

Instead of the typical polygonal-shaped lens aperture, this lens features a circular 7-blade aperture for more natural and smooth background defocus (bokeh).

Highest Optical Performance

The aspherical lens elements minimize distortion, while the ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements provide top-notch contrast, resolution, and color fidelity

Fast, versatile focusing

The internal focusing mechanism means that the lens body does not move, offering a more compact design, faster autofocus response, and reduced minimum focusing distances.

A lens that I have sold and bought again because it simply combines many things. For Sony's APS-C systems, it is a Swiss army knife. Yes, there are lenses with higher sharpness, but the combination of a small-sized lens, very good autofocus, and relatively good stabilization at this price range has no competition.

It practically lived on my A6000, which I had, and it is truly excellent when it comes to video, even in low light. At f/1.8, it has a little CA (chromatic aberration) in photos, but it is something that can easily be fixed in any image editing program, and from f/2.5 onwards, it almost disappears (at f/5.6, it is completely gone, and that's where the lens has maximum sharpness).

If you use Sony's APS-C bodies for video or for both photo and video, then the lens is, as I said before, a Swiss army knife. For photos only, there are better solutions, but when it comes to video, it performs exceptionally well, always considering its price.

I use this particular prime lens mainly for filming documentaries and events. After 2 years of use, I can say the following:

    1. It is small, lightweight, and moderately to well-built.
    2. It has OIS and can be used in many cases for handheld shooting without the need for support equipment. This is the main reason why I prefer it over the Sigma 30mm, as I work with a body without IBIS.
    3. On a gimbal, combined with its fast autofocus and low weight, it has given me wonderful shots. Ideal for artistic couple cinematography. It can be used alone for the entire shoot.
    4. In terms of colors and sharpness, it is a photographic lens and it is logical to provide a very good image.
    5. It is silent.

As for the negatives, I would like to point out the following:

    1. It is expensive.
    2. It does not go down to f1.4 like the Sigma 30mm, but only up to f1.8, which is not ideal for APS-C.
    3. The focus ring is very slow and does not help with manual focus. Even for a simple close-up shot, the lens struggles.

In summary, I always have it with me as it is necessary mainly due to the focal distance. If I had a body with IBIS, I would have chosen the Sigma 30mm. However, I used the Sigma at a wedding and the handheld shots had a slight shake due to the lack of steadyshot, which bothered me a lot even though I was careful. It looks like my mom was filming the shots.

Finally, I am a fan of APS-C and use it professionally, but Sony has abandoned it. The bodies in the a6 series would have nothing to envy from the a7 series in terms of video. However, all the focus has shifted to full frame, leaving APS-C at the same level since 2016. This, however, will be discussed in another review.

    Sincerely,
    George

Expensive but excellent results in low lighting. Also, the AF could be slightly better.

The lens is used on a Sony A6000. I have been using it for about two months, almost exclusively, to test its capabilities and it is the second lens after the kit lens 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OSS that I used for two years.
    Positives:
    1. It is lightweight and does not significantly change the volume of the body when attached.
    2. It significantly improved the sharpness of my photos and helped me a lot with portraits.
    3. The increase in aperture (F) from the kit lens' 3.5 to 1.8, as expected, provided brighter photos in low-light or difficult conditions.
    Negatives:
    1. The autofocus did not satisfy me. I expected it to be faster. Sometimes, under good lighting conditions, the kit lens focused more easily than this one. Especially on moving objects. I believed that the collaboration between the Sony body and lens would be better.
    2. When I turn on the camera without having removed the lens before and reattached it, sometimes a sharp sound is heard that lasts. Then you have to close the camera and turn it on again without needing to remove the lens. If you don't do this, the sound does not disappear and the camera cannot be turned on. It happens inexplicably sometimes, not always. It gives the feeling as if the lens is not attached properly, although it is not true. Maybe it is a material flaw in my lens.
    3. Very expensive for what it offers.
