Description

Description

This edition is an English translation of the well-known work by Kostas E. Fragkomichalos titled "The Massacres of Chios in 1822: What is the Exact Number of Their Victims?", which has been characterized as the most authentic and comprehensive critical study of those events of the Massacres to date.

The current English edition has significant additions that make the work even more attractive and interesting. Specifically, in addition to this study itself regarding the events of the Massacres and the number of their victims, as well as the Appendix containing unpublished narratives about the Massacres in Melanios, the English edition is enriched with an additional narrative of the events in Melanios, another extensive and moving account of the captivity and escape of an eight-year-old boy (Konstantis Paidousis-Lila) from the plain of Chios, the epitaph on the grave of Kara Ali, and an extensive and particularly vivid folk song from Kardamyla about those tragic events.

At the same time, the 130 pages of the book are adorned with 63 images (paintings, portraits, engravings, lithographs, maps, and photographs) referring to the narrated incidents, and, in this way, the book also becomes a rich and detailed album of the Massacres.

The author's goal with this English edition is for foreigners, as well as especially for the children of our expatriates wherever they may be, to become acquainted with this shocking chapter of the history of our long-suffering island throughout the ages.
