The urban and folk traditional residence in the Greek territory has its origins in the woven circular hut, which was the first home of humans, developing in plains and low-altitude areas until a few decades ago.
According to our view, the rectangular narrow-fronted and wide-fronted residences with a great variety of types and forms are a continuation of this, whose evolution is recorded from antiquity, the Hellenistic and Roman periods to the Ottoman conquest.
Furthermore, the research focuses on the urban and folk traditional residences of the 18th and 19th centuries, a relatively large number of examples of which have been preserved.
At the same time, from the end of the first third of the 19th century, the neoclassical residence develops in the large urban centers, coexisting with the corresponding traditional one for several decades and influencing it in specific elements, although the former is not the subject of this work.
In urban centers, the traditional residence can be found in certain neighborhoods that have been recently redeveloped (Varousi in Trikala, Kargiotissa in Veria, Doultsos in Kastoria, the old town of Xanthi). Further south, in the Peloponnese, individual Towers or groups of Towers (Mani) have also been restored.
In rural areas, the folk traditional residence has been replaced by "modern houses," and only in isolated cases or remote settlements are authentic forms preserved, which too tend to disappear due to their abandonment.
In this work, urban residences from various regions of Greece are subject to extensive comparative observations.
