The overall conclusion of this two-volume study states that America is a "permanently unfinished novel" that continuously expresses some desire, a desire for more power, greater security, more wealth, etc. And we know that where there is desire, there is also performance.
And in this sense, the political, cultural, and of course theatrical history of the place could be viewed as a labyrinthine performance of desires, sometimes with the specifications of a grand guignol and other times a grand spectacle, but almost always according to the logic of a shopping mall.
