The Sacred, Royal, Cross-Founding, and Patriarchal Monastery of Saint George of Peristereota has been a cradle of Hellenism and Christianity for approximately twelve centuries during particularly difficult times.
Together with the other monasteries of Pontus, it preserved and maintained a thriving Greek population in the Euxine Pontus. It protected, cultivated, and educated the inhabitants of the exarchate villages and became the reference point for all Christians who were under its spiritual guidance.
The greatest flourishing of the monastery was observed during the years of the Great Comneni, who benefited it in various ways with different privileges.
