The Forgotten City started as a Skyrim mod that won many awards. After a successful Kickstarter and many delays, it is now an independent game that replaced the magical city of the dwarves from the Skyrim mod with a historically accurate Roman city.

You control an archaeologist/escapee/veteran man/woman (depending on your choices) who finds themselves floating in a river without remembering how they got there, and is saved by a Karen (yes, that's what she's called, and the game itself makes fun of it). She tells you that she saved another man before you, but he went to check some ancient ruins nearby and never came back. As you go to find him, you fall into the same trap as him and end up in an ancient Roman city, where seemingly all the inhabitants, including an elderly version of the person you were looking for, have been turned into golden statues. Below, you find a vortex that takes you 2000 years into the past, where the city lived by one rule. If even one person sins, everyone will die.
You are in a Timeloop, which happens because someone intends to break the golden rule. You will have to get to know the 20+ inhabitants of the city, discover its secrets, and find a way to escape or prevent the impending sin. The rule seems like a strong motivator but it is clear that it is ambiguous, and you can find loopholes or even break it yourself and survive the slaughter thanks to the loop.

It is clear that they did their duty in terms of historical accuracy. You really feel like you are in a Roman community, with all the positives and negatives. Like all small communities, the inhabitants know each other, and you will soon get to know them too. You will have to fight at certain points, and fortunately, there are few, as the combat is not one of the positives they brought from Skyrim. The side quests called leads are equally important, as many of them are designed to lead you to the most significant discoveries, often have multiple solutions, and are necessary to achieve the most correct of the 4 endings, which I recommend everyone to do.

It is a very nice game, and it did not win so many awards unfairly. I recommend it to those who want mystery games or loop games, like Outer Wilds.

Hint: If you hesitate to help people believing that it is pointless because of the loop, when you complete a lead, you can assign Galerius, the first character you see, to solve the issue on his own at the beginning of each new loop. Key items for their solution are not wasted.
