Description

Description

This study examines the Islamization of the Greeks of Asia Minor who either did not want to leave, could not leave, or were abandoned during the period 1919-1925, based on the stories and narratives of the people who experienced these events, as well as the essence of their memories.

In this work, which operates within the framework of oral history, the power of micro-narratives is primarily utilized rather than macro-narratives. Therefore, without generalizations, the approach to the memories hidden in people's minds gains particular significance.

Through interviews with 6 individuals, a unity in the narrative emerged, which sought to understand memory and simultaneously forgetfulness. The field research was mainly conducted in Ankara and Smyrna. Some of the interview participants were children of those who experienced the events, while others were their grandchildren.

The experiences of migration, staying, Islamization, assimilation, and cultural integration were traced within the time frame before, during, and after the "population exchange." This study is delivered to the reading public intact, as it was developed at Hacettepe University, in the Department of Cultural Studies and Media Communication as part of the Master's program in 2017.

This work was published in Turkey in 2019 by the publishing house "Libra Kitap".
