Description

The last years of the Interwar period. While the specter of fascism covers many countries in Europe, the Spaniards resist the plans of General Franco who threatens their Republic. Then something impressive will happen.

Many thousands of people, from fifty-three countries, go to Spain to stand alongside the Republicans. They will fight with them, and many will lose their lives in the Iberian Peninsula. Among them are several hundred Greeks and Cypriots, who will participate in this unprecedented meeting of internationalism and solidarity.

The book opens the unknown archives of the International Brigades of the Spanish Civil War.

Who were they, what led them to Spain, why did they fight for the Republic of a foreign country, what were their political, social, and economic references, how many lost their lives fighting in a country that was not their own?

The history of the Greek volunteers, the buenos antifascistas, as the Spaniards often called them, and who became a point of reference by Ernest Hemingway, is recorded through the narration of Anastasia Tsackos Moratalla, an eighty-year-old woman from Albacete, in southeastern Spain:
"I am the daughter of a Spanish woman and a Greek brigadista, a member of the Brigadas Internacionales, who fought against Spanish nationalism. They had an exciting life, and I want to tell you about it."
