Description

A revealing and gripping narrative of the brutal conflict in Northern Ireland and its aftermath, sparked by a true story of murder. In December 1972, masked intruders abduct Jean McConville from her home in Belfast, a mother of ten children. Her children never saw her again. Her kidnapping was one of the most notorious episodes of the violent conflict known as The Troubles. The entire neighborhood knew the IRA was responsible, yet no one spoke out. In 2003, human remains were discovered on a beach. McConville's children realized it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was stuck to her dress—a handy item for diapers and torn clothes with so many kids.

With the pace of a thriller and a complex yet well-crafted structure, Patrick Radden Keefe's in-depth investigation reveals the horror, loss, and heartbreaking futility of a guerrilla war, the consequences of which were never addressed. From extreme IRA terrorists like Dolores Price, who planted bombs in London from a young age, to the spy games and dirty tricks of the British Army, and Gerry Adams, who negotiated peace but betrayed his hardliner comrades, Say Nothing presents a world of passion, revenge, and anguish.

Say Nothing rightly won the Orwell Prize for political writing. It is a shocking piece of reporting and a book… It could prove exceptionally timely again. Times Masterful… A tough but enlightening portrayal of The Troubles and their consequences. The Economist "Patrick Radden Keefe's extraordinary narrative of The Troubles is a mystery, a story, and a tragedy all at once. Keefe's in-depth research reveals the hidden consequences of The Troubles, illuminating both the horrific toll of the conflict and how it continues to affect today. A must-read." Gillian Flynn "Keefe's narrative is a marvel of structure, built with complex and contested materials, yet organized and balanced just as it should be… This sensitive and fair-minded book raises some difficult, and arguably impossible to answer, questions." New York Times

But when they opened the door, a gang stormed into the apartment. It happened so suddenly that none of Jean's children could count exactly how many there were – there were at least eight people, but there could have been ten or twelve in total. There were women and men. Some wore balaclavas on their faces, others wore nylon stockings that distorted their features and made them look like monsters. At least one was armed. When Jean appeared, having hastily put on her clothes, and was surrounded by her children, one of the men said sharply to her: "Put on your coat." She began to tremble intensely as the intruders tried to get her out of the apartment. "What's happening?" she asked – she had started to feel panic. Then her children lost their composure as well. Michael, eleven years old, tried to pull his mother. Billy and Jim hugged her and began to cry. The gang tried to calm the children, saying they would bring Jean back – they just wanted to talk to her. She would be gone for only a few hours.
