The writing of the book at hand, which will be the subject of teaching at the People's University of the venerable Society of Friends of the People, follows the line of our other historical writings. In the Callimachus, I shall tell no tales forever. And, as always, sine ira et studio (= without anger and passion). Without prejudices and ideological biases.
I do not hide the fact that my family, and this is in a percentage of 90% plus something, was pro-royalist Mani, and was Venizelist and anti-Metaxist. Later - and without this ever being stated - it was characterized as leftist in a D.N.A.-like manner. The author of the present book, as he has often stated, abhors labels. Therefore, in relation to all those mentioned in this book, he strives to be objective.
He makes no distinctions - as unfortunately happens even in university writings - in the bibliography he uses. Whether he agrees or disagrees with the authors, whenever he deems it appropriate, he uses them. No one is buried under ideological or personal animosity. Although it may not have exhaustive bibliography (let's not forget that it concerns lectures at a People's University), it attempts in this selective bibliography to represent all historical trends that have been formed regarding the Asia Minor campaign.
There is also an emphasis on the overlooked military events in recent years, which have been overshadowed by political, diplomatic, and economic analyses, and something fundamental is neglected: that the Asia Minor campaign was a pivotal military event. That the war is what constitutes its content and determined its outcome.
Unfortunately, many younger historians forget the Heraclitean: War is the father of all things. Perhaps because they have not tasted it. It would be disrespectful to the thousands of dead in the Asia Minor war (who might have been our relatives) to ignore the battles in which they lost their lives. Disrespect even to the dead opponents of the Greek army who fought selflessly to defend what they believed and still believe is theirs.
Here ends our preface. As an introduction, we will quote what we said at the Spiritual Center of Papagou on May 24, 2009.
