March 1930: Cinema is in a state of change. Talkies are gaining ground, and many producers, theater owners, and silent film stars are being sidelined.
The famous actress Betty Winter is fatally injured by a spotlight during the shooting of a talkie film. Initially, it appears to be an accident; however, Inspector Gereon Rath uncovers evidence pointing to murder. As his colleagues suspect a missing lighting technician, Rath's investigations lead him in a completely different direction, and he soon finds himself following his own path.
Avoiding his superior, who wants him out of the case, Rath's life becomes even more complicated when his father asks him to help the mayor of Cologne, Konrad Adenauer, with a blackmail case, and his ex-girlfriend, Charlie, attempts to rekindle their relationship – all while tensions between Nazis and Communists escalate into violent clashes.
This is the second book featuring Inspector Gereon Rath, on which the popular TV series Babylon Berlin is based. The German author Volker Kutscher masterfully captures crime and corruption in a 1930s Berlin that is decaying in the shadow of Nazism.
