Description

This book is a record, with minor corrections and additions, of four lectures organized at Armo, titled Growing Up in the Family. The audience's participation was numerous and lively, with many questions, which are documented in the book along with the speaker's answers.

It is very well known and accepted today that childhood significantly determines the overall development of personality and the trajectory of an individual's life. The text describes the stages of the child's psychosexual development, from conception, the embryonic period, and the subsequent stages, until the first completion of personality around the age of 5-6 years.

"The child is the father of the adult," Freud said, meaning that a child's experiences shape their personality as an adult. Of course, hereditary factors also play a role, but we cannot yet do anything substantial about those. However, we do know today, from Psychoanalysis and other related sciences, the enormous, determining role of parents—and the book focuses precisely on this role.

What is right, what is wrong in parental behavior? How is this behavior influenced by their own childhood? There are many books about children, some good and some superficial or incorrect. The uniqueness of this book lies in its psychoanalytic approach combined with the latest findings in Neuroscience, in order to present clear and comprehensible modern scientific views on child-rearing to the educated general public.

  • Very nice book and helpful for the person undergoing psychotherapy. Perhaps it sets some standards and some 'shoulds'—burdens on the mother (mainly) and father, which, of course, if someone reads as an external observer without taking them personally, they can understand quite a lot about the Greek family and how all this culture of Greece is passed down from generation to generation.

  • Extremely easy to read. While reading it, I revisited the early years of my sons and how we managed them. It is highly recommended, especially for new parents and spouses. It may provide you with the answers you can't find for many "why am I experiencing this?" questions. From pregnancy to the first 4-5 years of the child's life. I wish I had read it earlier.

Being pregnant, I read the book. The book is very easy and understandable, I really absorbed it. I found the first 3 chapters very interesting with very important information, while the 4th chapter was a bit boring for me personally. So, in conclusion, yes, it is a book that I would recommend for everyone to read, not only for parents, BUT also for women who have, expect, or are thinking of having children, as it can acquire a lot of psychological and fear of responsibility by reading it. Almost the whole book mentioned that any psychological issue that appears in the child is solely the mother's fault and responsibility. So let's gather the knowledge, but let's not forget that Mr. Giwosafat is a child psychiatrist of a certain age and many things have changed since then.

I read the book during my pregnancy, while I was waiting for my first child. At that time, having complete ignorance about what life with a baby is like, the book seemed very useful and very clear in what Mr. Yiassafat was saying. Then I gave birth, and even now when I think about what he said about what my mom should do, it seems funny, not to mention infuriating. If I were a little more vulnerable during my postpartum period, I might have died of depression from the guilt of not being able to do everything the author considered necessary. In theory, it's very nice for the mom to be involved with the baby 24/7 and for the dad not to even change a diaper, but in practice, all of this is impossible.

Necessary book for every new parent written in simple and understandable language by a scientist with deep knowledge of the subject. The gift I give to every friendly or relative couple who brings their first child into the world. It's worth dedicating two afternoons of your time (you don't need more to read it in its entirety) to read it.
