The book is aimed at an audience with no prior knowledge of the details of practical translation and provides a fairly comprehensive view of the issues arising from the study of translation. It shows how the study of translation can capture a reader's attention and what scientific issues may arise.

It addresses systemic-functional, cognitive, and social aspects of the phenomenon of transfer between English and Greek, from both synchronic and diachronic perspectives. It starts with practical issues of meaning production, moves on to cognitive aspects of translation and interpretation, continues with aspects of tourism translation and globalization, and concludes with diachronic approaches to gender identity in translation and diachronic aspects of the history of translation in the West.

This is a collaborative work by the translation team of the Department of English Language and Philology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and owes much to ideas that emerged from the interaction of the authors with undergraduate and postgraduate interpretation students from the Department, which is always enlightening and productive.
