This endeavor is a collective effort for a contemporary interpretation of a fundamental event for modern Greeks. It is the first attempt in many years for a synthetic approach to 1821 and the early years of the free state.
In the volume concerning the ideological currents of the time, the Neohellenic Enlightenment of Paschalis Kitromilides intersects with the Ottoman view of just governance as presented by the Greek-speaking scholar of the Ottoman archives of Constantinople, Sukru Ilicak. This is the first time that the views of Sultan Mahmud II and his council regarding the Greek Revolution are brought to light by historical science.
Elena Angelomati-Tsougaraki writes about the pre-revolutionary Greek society, Thanos Veremis and Giannis Koliopoulos discuss the reasons that led the Greeks to the Revolution, Iakovos Michailidis describes the military and political events that followed, and younger scholars, Sotiroula Vasileiou, Konstantinos iapanikoláou, and Rozi Angelaki, focus on the loans of Independence, the management of state power by Kapodistrias, and the period between the assassination of the Governor and the arrival of King Otto.
