Description

We started this journey on our own initiative, and with the advantage of being women, we dared to break the taboo of the Muslim community in Thrace. Thus, we managed to earn the trust of the minority and to get to know its deeply hidden world.

With boundless patience and persistence, for two years (2008-2010) and equipped with our journalistic experience regarding Islamic culture, we entered the homes of Muslims and became partakers of their lives. We lived with them, shared their anxieties and dreams. We got to know the contradictory reality of the minorities: Pomaks, Turks, and Roma.

We also discovered another minority, completely unknown to most people, that of Sudanese Africans, whose ancestors came as slaves to our country during Ottoman rule. We photographed the modern Muslim woman in her personal moments. The children and youth at school and during their leisure. The work in tobacco - a job that is heading towards its decline.

We managed to obtain a long-term permit from the Ministry of Education to enter minority schools. There, we encountered serious problems in education - a source of issues for this community. We listened to Muslim Greek citizens reveal to us the pressing issues concerning their socio-political lives.

Our purpose is, through this photographic album based on journalistic research, to present to the rest of Greece the unknown world of Greek Thrace; a beautiful piece of land about which there exists ignorance and indifference. No similar endeavor has been undertaken until today, and it is absent from Greek literature.

The research for this book was extensive; however, due to limited space, it was not possible to include all the individuals and issues concerning the minorities of Thrace. May it serve as a starting point for further engagement with the subject.
