Beyond the interest that these elements hold as they document the captivity of Greek officers in fascist and Nazi camps (1941-1945), they indirectly illuminate aspects of Greek history, such as the involvement of the body of officers in the political life of the country both before and after the war, culminating in the disastrous imposition of military dictatorship in 1967.
The book highlights and records the fierce conflict in the concentration camps between two factions of officers, the so-called "patriots" and their so-called "traitor" EAM-supporting colleagues.
Additionally, the captivity and actions of one officer, Major Vassilis Merkouris, are selected and narrated separately, as his experience encapsulates the tumultuous journey of the body of officers from the National Schism (1916 - 1919) to the Civil War (1946 - 1949).
