Description

What did a Minoan princess pack in her luggage to go to Egypt? How did a bored Mycenaean public servant pass the time? How did a centaur injure his leg? How did an indecent dance accidentally lead to the creation of Democracy? Which foreign slave became a rich banker? Why did Heraclitus suggest we slap Homer? Why do we call the Cyclades the Cyclades?

Archaeology, just like antiquity, belongs to all of us. It is enjoyable, moving, frightening, humorous; it inspires us and shows us what it means to be human in the entirety of existence on this blue ball floating in the universe known as Earth. Archaeology is a universally therapeutic science.

The countless centuries of ancient cultural heritage in the Greek region often seem difficult to understand. They are not. Starting from social networks, the Archaeostoryteller, a Science Communication project, "breaks the rules" and brings archaeology to the general public in a cheerful way.

This book presents the whole of Greek antiquity, from deep prehistory to its end. Two strangers meet in an elevator that stops between floors. One is an archaeologist, the other is not. Triggered by the question "what do you do," an exciting dialogue begins, leading to a journey through space and time.

At the same time, answers are provided to the most common questions about the science of archaeology. An enjoyable journey through the greatest moments as well as the smallest stories of people from Greek antiquity, which, even if it cannot fit in the elevator, certainly fits in our imagination.

The beloved Archaeostoryteller, Dr. Theodoros Papakostas, puts aside the boring dates and names and takes us on a journey into the real, vibrant everyday life of antiquity. Through short, witty, and scientifically documented stories, he reveals the human face behind the myths and statues. If you thought history was not for you, this book will make you change your mind once and for all.

Excellent book that is addressed to every reader, of any age, whether they have a relatively good knowledge of history or are completely clueless. In a nice way, in the form of simple questions that we have all thought of at some point, you learn about the history of the Greek region from 3000 BC up to almost the Byzantine Empire. Easy to read, pleasant, and very educational

Although my writing style seemed a bit silly, it is concise and covers a large time span of the prehistoric and historical period of our area. I would mainly recommend it to those who have many gaps and do not have much time available, as well as to young people.

Papakostas is the type of person who will tell you things historically as they are in the book. For him, there is no "we don't talk about these things" because they affect the image, patriotic sentiment, or because they supposedly promote patriarchy, phallocracy, etc. And ultimately, this way you reconcile with the past and place it in its real position, away from excessive idealizations and moralizing that lead to patriotism or demonization. So, an excellent scholar and writer!

A very nice book, in an easy style to be read by the whole family or with the whole family. The author tries to free the reader from fanaticism and intrigue that can be caused by a historical and mythical book, something that is evident throughout the narrative but completely clear at the end with the writings that were "lost" due to low popularity instead of being systematically destroyed in the fire, which is in great contrast to the historical aspect.

I hope the second "victim" of it, the taxi driver, will be another book (at least) so that other things that didn't make it into this book can be written. Philosophical schools, historical and mythical events, etc.

I recommend it to anyone who was intrigued by history and had gaps in their knowledge, but also generally because for me, this book lays the foundations on which the reader will build their future knowledge. Essentially, it is in the form of a dialogue, which makes reading quite light and enjoyable, and the reader can step into the shoes of one of the two speakers (the second being an archaeologist who explains things) without it simply being a mechanical narration of the story as it happens in many books. It delves into the essence of archaeology as a science, exploring various related topics.

Okay, Papakostas is excellent. Even if you don't like antiquity, it will make you love it and then some. As someone already familiar with archaeology, as someone said in a comment, it won't add any additional knowledge. But... the storytelling/description style is entertaining and very enjoyable. I highly recommend it.

I was impressed by the presentation style. The events (most of them) have been written again, but the style is unique. I had recently learned some details from the author's podcast / TikTok. I have already gifted it twice and it has made a very positive impression.

It contains some valuable basic and non-information, but the writing style is predictable and the dialogues are staged, in order for the narrative to flow

I was impressed by the presentation style. The events (most of them) have been written again, but the style is unique. I had recently learned some details from the author's podcast / TikTok. I have already gifted it twice and it has made a very positive impression.

Beautifully written, easy to read, understandable. You gather information that we definitely didn't learn in school.

Well-written, concise in the language of the book that helped me organize scattered knowledge related to antiquity. And the FAQ section at the end of each chapter was very useful! We look forward to the next ones from the archaeostoryteller!

  • Excellent book that is addressed to every reader, of any age, whether they have a relatively good knowledge of history or are completely clueless. In a nice way, in the form of simple questions that we have all thought of at some point, you learn about the history of the Greek region from 3000 BC up to almost the Byzantine Empire. Easy to read, pleasant, and very educational

  • Interesting but the dialogue was so tiring that I kept closing it. It could have been said in many places without some "silly" interruptions from the unknown guy in the elevator and then starting all over again

  • fantastic book which I would recommend to anyone interested in the past, archaeology, or history. This book is easy to read and is beautifully illustrated

  • Although my writing style seemed a bit silly, it is concise and covers a large time span of the prehistoric and historical period of our area. I would mainly recommend it to those who have many gaps and do not have much time available, as well as to young people.
